Korea Gas Safety Corporation Holds Final Report Meeting on Consulting Study of Mongolia’s Gas Industry Environment — Comprehensive Analysis of Mongolia’s Gas Industry and Safety Management, Covering Climate Conditions, the Industrial Environment, and Relevant Laws and Regulations — The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk, hereinafter referred to as KGS) announced that it held the “Final Report Meeting on the Consulting Study of Mongolia’s Gas Industry Environment” in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on September 2. The event was held as part of the KOICA Official Development Assistance (ODA) project, “Establishment of the Legal and Institutional Framework and Capacity Building for Gas Safety Management in Mongolia,” which is currently underway in Mongolia. The event was jointly hosted by KGS and the Mineral Resources and Petroleum Authority of Mongolia (MRPAM) and attended by approximately 60 gas industry representatives from both countries, along with officials from public institutions including the KOICA Mongolia Office, the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Ulaanbaatar City Government. The meeting presented the findings of a comprehensive analysis of Mongolia’s gas safety management, including its climate conditions, current gas industry environment, and gas safety-related laws and regulations. It also laid the groundwork for shaping future directions for Mongolia’s gas safety management. Based on the findings of the consulting study, KGS plans to propose a draft “Gas Safety Management Act of Mongolia” (tentative title) to the Mongolian government. The event began with opening remarks by Gyurnggoog Bahk, President & CEO of KGS, followed by welcoming remarks from Purevjav Bayanbaatar, Chairman of MRPAM, congratulatory remarks by Haeng-Lan Jo, Country Director of the KOICA Mongolia Office, and a presentation of the consulting results. “I hope this consulting study will serve as a meaningful starting point for jointly exploring the future direction of Mongolia’s gas industry based on Korea’s experience and systems in gas safety management,” said Gyurnggoog Bahk, President & CEO of KGS. The meetings reviewed the results of regulatory improvements that the public and businesses can experience firsthand. They also discussed ways to strengthen safety management to prevent gas accidents in everyday life and industrial workplaces. At the “KGS Regulatory Redesign Performance Review Meeting,” KGS conducted a comprehensive review of its regulatory redesign efforts during the first half of the year and shared key issues and challenges encountered in implementing each task. For the second half of the year, KGS agreed to focus its efforts on delivering tangible results in the field, while reducing inconvenience caused by unnecessary regulations for the public and businesses and more firmly safeguarding essential safety. At the meeting, KGS reviewed progress on 53 detailed tasks under four strategic areas: ▲ growth of new industries, ▲ economy and industry, ▲ private-sector autonomy, and ▲ safety and shared growth. It also presented the key achievements of five priority tasks and discussed major issues and future implementation plans in depth. In particular, KGS went beyond simply checking whether each task had been implemented. It focused on how effectively each task had addressed the actual inconveniences experienced by the public and businesses in the field, and whether safety was being properly secured while reducing regulatory burdens. ; Based on these reviews, KGS plans to continue identifying regulatory improvement tasks that deliver tangible benefits in the field and to further expand their impact. KGS also convened the Safety Measures Council, composed of leading experts in disaster response, inspection, and diagnostics, to discuss practical preventive measures aimed at reducing recurring gas accidents in everyday life and industrial workplaces. KGS plans to further strengthen safety management around three key strategies under its comprehensive measures: ▲ reducing casualties from five major types of gas accidents, ▲ preventing accidents in places closely connected to daily life, and ▲ preventing accidents at industrial workplaces. Established in July, the Safety Measures Council works to strengthen gas accident prevention and management and proactively identify and address risk factors that may have been overlooked under the existing safety management system. KGS plans to review the implementation status of the comprehensive gas accident prevention measures established in the first quarter of 2026 and analyze the causes and implications of gas accidents that occurred during the first half of the year. ; Based on the findings, KGS will develop new preventive measures to prevent similar accidents from recurring in people’s daily lives and further reduce safety blind spots. “The success of regulatory improvement should be measured not by how many tasks have been addressed, but by how much more convenient and safer people and businesses actually feel in the field,” said Gyurnggoog Bahk, President & CEO of KGS. KGS completed emergency safety measures for gas facilities damaged by wall collapses, landslides, and ground subsidence caused by the heavy rains from July 15 to 18. It also took emergency safety measures in areas where city gas supply had been suspended. In addition, KGS conducted safety inspections of gas facilities in flood-affected areas, including Seoho Market in Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do. On July 18, KGS convened a situation assessment meeting in the Gas Safety Situation Room at its headquarters to review the status of gas facility damage and safety measures. The meeting also examined response plans to support the safe return of evacuees and prevent further damage. President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk also took steps to support the prompt return of affected residents to daily life. On July 19, he visited an area where residents had been evacuated and city gas supply had been suspended due to ground subsidence. Together with officials from Kyungnam Energy Co., Ltd., the local city gas company, he inspected the extent of the damage and the status of safety measures. “Gas safety at disaster sites is not only about preventing further damage, but also the first step toward helping affected residents return to their daily lives with peace of mind,” said Gyurnggoog Bahk, President & CEO of KGS. The inspection was aimed at ensuring the prompt recall of defective LPG cylinders produced by an unnamed manufacturer and preventing gas accidents. The site visit was arranged to address public concerns over defective LPG cylinders and improve the recall rate by strengthening cooperation with LPG cylinder reinspection facilities on the front lines of distribution. During the visit, Weon-Seok Seo met with industry representatives to discuss ways to improve the recall rate. He emphasized the importance of recalling defective cylinders and urged the industry to actively cooperate in ensuring that defective cylinders are properly identified and collected during the reinspection process. He also toured the facility to closely inspect the recall and storage of defective cylinders, listened to challenges faced on site, and discussed support measures to accelerate the recall process. KGS plans to continue monitoring the progress of the defective cylinder recall in cooperation with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and provide full support to significantly improve the recall rate. “The prompt recall of defective LPG cylinders is directly linked to public safety,” said a KGS official. Korea Gas Safety Corporation Receives Plaque of Appreciation for Regulatory Innovation Related to Semiconductor EUV Equipment — ASML Executive Visits KGS and Expresses Appreciation for Its Efforts to Improve Regulations for EUV Equipment and Innovate the Inspection System — The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk, hereinafter referred to as KGS) announced that Sinem Güven, Vice President of Netherlands-based ASML, visited KGS on July 21. During the visit, she expressed appreciation for KGS’s efforts to swiftly improve regulations and innovate the inspection system for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment used in semiconductor manufacturing. She also presented KGS with a plaque of appreciation. KGS worked with the government to amend the relevant laws and regulations to bring EUV equipment under the category of “specified equipment” pursuant to the High-Pressure Gas Safety Control Act. As a result, the time required to introduce EUV equipment was significantly reduced from 34 days to 9 days. In addition, while developing KGS Code AA916, “Facility, Technical and Inspection Standards for the Manufacture of Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography Equipment for Semiconductor Manufacturing,” KGS gathered input from internal and external stakeholders to ensure that industry needs were fully reflected. KGS also completed all procedures required for the establishment and amendment of the detailed standards—from convening the Subcommittee and Standards Committee to obtaining final government approval—in just over a month. This helped facilitate the timely introduction and operation of EUV lithography equipment in Korea. As a follow-up measure, KGS introduced a fast-track inspection process to significantly reduce the processing time for factory registration and production-stage inspections.* * A joint review team of KGS experts combined the factory audit and production-stage inspection, reducing the inspection period from 50 days to 18 days. As a result, the import and installation schedules for EUV equipment in Korea are expected to become more predictable, while the administrative and time burdens on the semiconductor industry are expected to be significantly reduced. “The regulatory improvements and inspection innovation represent a model case of regulatory rationalization, reducing unreasonable burdens on industry while maintaining the existing level of safety management,” said Gyurnggoog Bahk, President & CEO of KGS. He added, “KGS will continue to communicate closely with industry to support the competitiveness and stable growth of the semiconductor sector.”

Expected to Enhance Gas Safety Services for the Public through Faster and More Accurate Work Support — The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk, hereinafter referred to as KGS) announced that it will officially launch the “Gas Safety AI Advisor,” a work support system powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI), for organization-wide use on July 15. Generative AI technology has recently emerged as a key driver of workplace innovation across various industries, and its use is also expanding in the public sector to improve administrative efficiency and services to the public. In response to these changes, KGS developed the “Gas Safety AI Advisor” to establish an AI-powered work support environment that enables employees to perform their duties more quickly and accurately. The Gas Safety AI Advisor is not simply a conversational AI tool, but a generative AI system based on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology that provides responses using KGS’s professional knowledge and operational expertise. Approximately 30,000 work-related documents—including laws and regulations, KGS Codes, internal regulations, guidelines, work manuals, and technical materials—have been organized into a database, enabling the AI to search relevant sources and generate responses based on them. The system was designed to minimize inaccurate responses that may occur with general-purpose generative AI and provide reliable information tailored to KGS operations. The Gas Safety AI Advisor answers questions about laws and regulations, KGS Codes, internal rules, guidelines, and manuals. It also provides functions for drafting documents such as official letters, reports, and meeting materials, as well as document summarization and foreign-language translation. In addition, it provides relevant supporting materials alongside its responses, allowing users to verify the information directly and improving the reliability and usability of the information provided. Generative AI has also been applied to civil complaint handling. The system analyzes submitted complaints, automatically generates draft responses, and routes each case to the appropriate department, thereby improving the speed and consistency of complaint handling. Employees can review and revise the AI-generated drafts before use, which is expected to reduce their workload while also helping improve the quality of civil complaint services. Since March this year, KGS has enhanced the system through three rounds of pilot testing, incorporating user feedback and making functional improvements. Following final integration testing, KGS is now ready for the organization-wide launch. The system is expected to reduce the time employees spend searching for information and repeatedly drafting documents. By providing relevant supporting materials, it will also improve work accuracy and reliability, facilitate the sharing and use of internal expertise, and accelerate digital workplace innovation while supporting the delivery of more efficient administrative services. KGS plans to continue expanding the use of AI following the organization-wide launch. Korea Gas Safety Corporation Pursues Technical Exchange with Malaysia on City Gas Safety Management — Korea–Malaysia (KGS–EC) Seminar on Gas Safety Policy and Technology Exchange Held — The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk, hereinafter referred to as KGS) announced that it co-hosted the “Korea–Malaysia (KGS–EC) Seminar on Gas Safety Policy and Technology Exchange” with Malaysia’s Energy Commission (hereinafter referred to as EC) on July 14 at Seoul Metropolitan Headquarters, Korea Gas Safety Corporation. To further strengthen the cooperative framework between the two organizations and expand policy and technical exchanges in the field of city gas safety management, the seminar was organized as a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Gas Safety Cooperation signed in April last year. The Malaysian government is shifting the country’s energy sector from LPG toward LNG. As a result, demand for Korea’s LNG and CNG pipeline safety management systems and regulatory frameworks is growing. The seminar is expected to provide an opportunity to share Korea’s advanced gas safety management policies and technologies and further strengthen the foundation for cooperation between the two countries. At the seminar, EC presented an overview of Malaysia’s gas supply and its regulatory and safety management frameworks for gas facilities. KGS then introduced: ▲ Korea’s city gas laws and safety management system; ▲ case studies of gas accidents and pipeline integrity management;and ▲ the current status of technological development in pipeline integrity management. The two organizations also shared a broad range of experiences and views on city gas safety management policies and technologies. Korea Gas Safety Corporation Hosts 3rd Hydrogen Industry Promotion and Safety Technology Conference — Around 300 Hydrogen Industry Stakeholders from Government, Public Institutions, and Companies Gather to Exchange Insights on Hydrogen Safety Policies and Technologies — The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk, hereinafter referred to as KGS) announced that it co-hosted the “3rd Hydrogen Industry Promotion and Safety Technology Conference” with the Korea Hydrogen Alliance (KHA) and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP) on July 8 and 9 at Cheongju OSCO. Now in its third year, the conference was organized with a focus on “safety,” the foundation for the sustainable growth of Korea’s hydrogen industry. Experts from across government, public institutions, and the hydrogen industry gathered to bring together industry practices, research and development, and technological innovation, and discussed in depth how to strengthen the future competitiveness of the hydrogen economy and advance the safety management system. Approximately 300 experts attended the event, including representatives from the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the five dedicated hydrogen institutions designated under the Hydrogen Act, and around 80 private hydrogen companies. Through a total of 14 presentations, participants shared in-depth insights into safety policies, institutional frameworks, and on-site safety technologies across the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to storage, transportation, and utilization. Sharing the Latest Technology Trends in Clean and Liquefied Hydrogen and the Achievements of Local Governments During the conference, KGS gave presentations on: ▲ trends in the enactment and amendment of hydrogen-related laws and safety standards; ▲ safety management measures for hydrogen research and development and demonstration sites; and ▲ the functions and roles of the Liquefied Hydrogen Inspection Support Center. Through these presentations, KGS outlined future directions for hydrogen safety policy and strategies to advance the safety management system. The conference also covered a wide range of technology trends in clean and liquefied hydrogen, including: ▲ an overview and the current status of global hydrogen industry and policy projects by the Korea Hydrogen Alliance; ▲ the outlook for hydrogen utilization in the energy market and related safety strategies by the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP); ▲ trends in water electrolysis technologies for green hydrogen by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST); ▲ liquefied hydrogen storage system technologies by CRYOS; and ▲ the operation of liquefied hydrogen infrastructure and safety management for liquefied hydrogen transportation by Hyosung Hydrogen Co., Ltd. The conference also featured presentations on: ▲ achievements in promoting the hydrogen industry by Wanju County; and ▲ strategies for fostering the hydrogen industry by Pohang City. These presentations provided an opportunity to further shape the direction of hydrogen industry development at the local government level. On-Site Regulatory Innovation Meeting and Enhanced Cooperation among Dedicated Hydrogen Institutions In particular, the conference featured an “On-Site Meeting for Regulatory Innovation in the Hydrogen Industry,” where companies and KGS directly discussed the regulatory challenges faced in the field and tasks for institutional improvement. Based on feedback from industry, participants expressed support for a policy direction that strikes a balance between regulatory rationalization and safety, and recognized the need for continued communication and cooperation. In addition, at the “Cooperation Meeting of the Five Dedicated Hydrogen Institutions,” the institutions shared their major projects and current status and discussed ways to expand technical support and policy coordination for the effective implementation of the government’s hydrogen policies. Special training sessions were also held, and promotional booths were operated at the venue to introduce hydrogen safety policies, the latest safety management technologies, and inspection and certification systems to visitors. Government awards and institutional commendations were also presented to recognize individuals who contributed to the development of the hydrogen industry and the promotion of a safety culture. “As the hydrogen industry moves beyond technological competition and enters an era of competition in safety, we will make safety a core competitive strength and closely connect policy, technology, and industry,” said Hong-chul Kim, Executive Director, Gas Technology at KGS. Korea Gas Safety Corporation Welcomes Hong-chul Kim as New Executive Director, Gas Technology The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk, hereinafter referred to as KGS) held an inauguration ceremony for its new Executive Director, Gas Technology, Hong-chul Kim, at its headquarters in Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, on July 6. The new Executive Director's term of office runs for two years, from July 6, 2026, to July 5, 2028. Executive Director Hong-chul Kim has built an extensive career within the organization, previously serving as the Head of the Energy Safety Empirical Research Center, General Manager of the Ulsan Regional Office, General Manager of the Petrochemical Diagnosis Division, and Director of the Institute of Hydrogen Safety Technology. Notably, during his tenure as General Manager of the Petrochemical Diagnosis Division, he spearheaded technological innovation by introducing robots and IT-based safety technologies to the diagnosis of oil refining and petrochemical facilities. He also supported 11 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in entering new markets through collaborative initiatives. Furthermore, as Director of the Institute of Hydrogen Safety Technology, he contributed to the stable operation of the "Five Major Hydrogen Safety Infrastructures" by successfully completing the Liquid Hydrogen Inspection Center in December 2025. Korea Gas Safety Corporation Invites Applications for the 7th Gas Technical Standards Committee - Members to deliberate and vote on the enactment, amendment, and abolition of KGS Codes for the next three years - The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk, hereinafter referred to as KGS) announced on July 1 that it is openly recruiting committee and subcommittee members for the 7th Gas Technical Standards Committee. ; Pursuant to Article 33-2 of the High-Pressure Gas Safety Management Act and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (hereinafter referred to as MOTIE) Public Notice No. 2026-456, the committee will deliberate and resolve on the enactment, amendment, and abolition of detailed standards (KGS Code). Committee members are appointed by the Minister of MOTIE, while subcommittee members are appointed by the Chairman of the Gas Technical Standards Committee. The newly appointed 7th committee members will serve a three-year term from December 1, 2026, to November 30, 2029. The Gas Technical Standards Committee consists of up to 20 members, including one Chairman and one Vice Chairman, appointed by the Minister of MOTIE. Eligible applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria: ▲ Current or former assistant professors or higher in departments related to mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, safety management, civil, architectural, electrical, electronic engineering, or gas at a college/university. ▲ Holders of a doctoral degree or a Professional Engineer (PE) license in the aforementioned fields with at least 5 years of working experience. ▲ Executives or higher-level technical officers at gas-related business associations or companies with at least 10 years of working experience in the gas sector. ▲ Principal researchers or higher at government-funded or specific science and technology research institutes. Simultaneously, KGS is recruiting members for subcommittees that pre-examine and review detailed standards proposals. The subcommittee structure comprises 13 subcommittees with approximately 10 members each, appointed by the Committee Chairman. ;Eligible applicants for the subcommittees must meet at least one of the following criteria: ▲ Current or former full-time lecturers or higher in departments related to mechanical, chemical, metallurgical, safety management, civil, architectural, electrical, electronic engineering, or gas at a college/university. ▲ Holders of a bachelor's degree, Engineer license, or Master Craftsman license under the National Technical Qualifications Act, with at least 5 years of working experience in the aforementioned fields. ▲ Department managers or higher-level technical officers at gas-related business associations or companies with at least 10 years of working experience in the gas sector. ▲ Senior researchers or higher at government-funded or specific science and technology research institutes.
