KOLAS Certification newly Acquired by Hydrogen Appliance Inspection & Certification Center of Korea Gas Safety Corporation - Improving the Quality of Hydrogen Appliance Inspection and Test by an Agency Dedicated to Hydrogen Safety Management - - Contributing to Vitalizing the Hydrogen Economy with Basic Qualifications for Overseas Certification - Hydrogen Appliance Inspection & Certification Center (hereinafter referred to as the Center) of The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk, hereinafter referred to as KGS) announced on Dec 24 that it has obtained the KOLAS(Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme)(Test, KS Q ISO/IEC 17025) certification. The Center was established for the purpose of legal inspection and tests requested for hydrogen appliances (hydrogen extraction facilities, water electrolysis facilities and fixed/mobile fuel cells) in accordance with the Hydrogen Act, and since its opening in November 2024, it has been supporting the development of the domestic hydrogen appliance industry by conducting thorough legal inspections. In particular, the Center adopted the KOLAS quality system to establish a system for the demand for overseas certification of domestic hydrogen appliance manufacturers and the advancement of test and inspection quality. The accreditation standard is the largest in the hydrogen appliance sector in Korea, and 29 types of standards (484 test items) were registered, including ISO 16110 for hydrogen extraction facilities, ISO 22734, and IEC 62282 for fuel cells. Korea's First Successful Test of a Domestic Liquefied Hydrogen Storage Tank - Evaluation of Insulation Performance for Domestic Storage Tanks Expected to Replace Foreign Storage Tanks - The Korea Gas Safety Corporation's (President & CEO Gyurnggoog Bahk, hereinafter referred to as KGS) Energy Safety Empirical Research Center (hereinafter referred to as Center) announced that it has successfully completed the first insulation performance evaluation of liquefied hydrogen storage tanks in Korea. This test is a final performance verification procedure for the commercialization of domestic storage tanks, and is significant in that it is the first insulation performance evaluation conducted on a real-scale domestic storage tank in Korea. This insulation performance evaluation was conducted on the liquefied hydrogen storage tank developed by Cryos Co., Ltd. The storage tank has a vertical type structure with a total storage capacity of 3.823 tons and a volume of 59.998㎥. The standard for the insulation performance of the liquefied hydrogen storage tank satisfies the natural vaporization rate of less than 0.9% based on a storage capacity of 4.0 tons. The storage tank evaluated in this test recorded a vaporization rate of about 0.2% to exceed the standard and showed performance that satisfies the final evaluation criteria for commercialization. Until now, liquefied hydrogen storage tanks have mainly relied on overseas imports, but as the performance of domestic products is officially proven through this test, they can be replaced with the products cheaper than imported ones, which are expected to speed up the supply of domestic liquefied hydrogen storage facilities. An employee from the Center said, "This test is the final step for the practical application of the liquefied hydrogen storage tank and laid a practical foundation for the commercialization of domestic technology. The emergency safety inspection was conducted this time as an emergency measure following the loss of more than 4,000 houses due to large forest fires concentrated in Yeongnam area, and as a result of inspecting 6,826 houses using LP gas, it was found that 3,004 houses of them lost gas facilities. In addition, in parallel with the safety inspection, safety measures such as moving LPG containers, blocking gas valves, separating controllers, and installing alert signs were also implemented to prevent secondary accidents. As soon as a large forest fire occurred, KGS entered an emergency response system, such as forming an accident countermeasure headquarters and reinforcing the gas safety comprehensive situation room. The Gas Technology Standard Committee deliberated and decided on three amendments within two divisions On February 21, the 161st Gas Technology Standard Committee (Chairman: Shin Dong-il) deliberated and decided on three amendments to detailed standards, including KGS FP654 (Facilities, Technology and Inspection for Liquefied Urban Gas Automobile Refueling). In accordance with the revision of the Enforcement Rules of the Urban Gas Business Act, the target of the mobile liquefied urban gas refueling project was expanded from the existing yard tractor to automobiles to improve the standards for the safety of liquefied urban gas refueling facilities. As a major revision of the gas equipment division among gas products, the validity period of specific detailed standards was extended in consideration of the period required to develop a market for expanding the supply of safety fuse cocks for blocking measures. The revision of the detailed standards, which has been deliberated by the committee, is expected to be approved by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy as early as March.
